This photo may not look like anything, but when you
click on it you will enlarge it and see these red balls of fire that are
flying out of the volcano. These have actually landed on unwitting
tourists who immediately met their demise! SO, to say that I didn't
stick around is an understatement. But, here's Scott wanting to wait 'til
sunset to get his best shot!
That
orange smoke is actually bellowing out of the volcano. AND the wind is
blowing, so we have smoke and soot and sand blowing onto us.
We
were warmly welcomed to Tanna Island. Even though our chart didn't show
any detail of Port Resolution we were able to safely anchor. We were
quite interested in the outrigger canoes the locals used for fishing and
transportation.
Here's
a close-up of the canoes.
Some
of the younger kids of the village.
The
villages on Tanna Island were among the most "humble" of any we've seen.
The same could be said for the clothing of the Vanuatu people (we would
call them rags.).
In
spite of these humble surroundings the people were very generous.
Kids
seem to have fun everywhere! Here they're playing a form of soccer.
The
kids love to help us with the dinghy and carrying large (heavy) boxes of
Bibles up to the school. They like to show us how strong they are!
I
hope these beautiful smiles on the faces of the students give you an
idea of why we bring these Bibles!
More
lovely faces from Tanna.
One
of our "events" on Tanna was a luncheon at the beach on the other side
of the island.
The
waves were pretty big and certainly this was no place for Quest.
But
it's a great place for local surfers.
Occasionally
we do catch a fish and like to show it off.
In
this case we had a little help from our friends (Dennis and Peery - with
the "fish killing vodka" in hand) and we all enjoyed a delicious dinner
as a result. |
