Waya is a very beautiful Island, part of the Yasawa Islands of Fiji. The
weather did NOT cooperate with us in 2009, so it took us several tries
to actually anchor and stay at southern Waya, but we persevered and Jim
and Bill finally got a chance to visit a Fijian village and meet a
lovely man named Tui.
We
were pretty lucky this year in our fishing efforts. This is one of the
Spanish mackerel we caught in Fiji. We had a couple of good meals and
some good pupus from this guy!
On the right are Bill and Jim from CYC enjoying a little sashimi in
Fiji.
Waya
is a beautiful island. Since we weren't comfortable at our southern
anchorage we had to move to the northern bay (at night - NOT good). This
is where we were following a recommended track into the bay (as had
another boat), and as we're starting to drop the anchor I see the other
boat dead ahead!!! WOW! That was a surprise. Fortunately, as you plan to
anchor you're generally going slow and we were able to stop the boat and
change course, avoiding the nearly inevitable collision!
Every
place in Fiji we did sevusevu with the chief or his designate. You can
see that this village (named Yalobi) is quite prosperous.
One
of the reasons is that they see a lot of yachts and receive regular
income from the sale of their handicrafts.
The
village is very neat and attractive with little paths and hedges along
the paths.

These photos are from 2007 and 2009, so you see Stacey and Bill as well
as Jim from Wetnose.
When
we returned to Yalobi in 2009 we met a neat guy named Tui who showed us
around and invited us to his house for a nice snack, AND I don't have
photos of that visit. |
