When we were approaching Donsol we couldn't quite
figure out Where we were supposed to go to find the folks that would
take us out to see the whale sharks. One boat came close to us as we
were approaching the shore and he led us in further toward some
buildings. We went in a far as we dared, as it was getting fairly
shallow and we didn't know if there were any obstructions. Still we were
quite a long ways from the shore. Being the chicken I am I told
the guys to go in on the dinghy and I'd stay on the boat.
The
boat we went out on was just like the one above. The guys would stand
out front or up on top and look for the sharks. The whale sharks are
filter feeders and they come to this area every year to feed. Well, that
means that the water is full of plankton for then to eat and hence the
water is not too clear. But, we did our best in the photography
department and were pretty happy to get anything.
How
would you like to see this big guy come toward you? As it turns out he's
not very interested in you as he's not a carnivore.
The
boat came right over to help us get out of the water. This was strictly
a snorkeling exercise as diving was prohibited. Even so, it seemed to us
that we were VERY close to the sharks.
These
creatures are about 50 feet long. With the particles in the water we
couldn't really see from one end to the other.
We
were pretty excited about our experience in Donsol.
The
guys that took us out to see the whale sharks picked us up and let us
off at our boat. That was pretty nice. When we got back,
we just got ourselves organized and took off for an overnight trip to
Puerto Galero. |
